Why this site exists
Search almost any ETF question and you find the same eight hundred words rewritten a hundred times: a definition, four bullet points about diversification, and a link to open a brokerage account. Go one level deeper and the trail goes cold.
What decides whether a fund tracks its index well? Why does the same fund quietly cost a European investor more than an American? What actually happens inside a fund when a thousand people sell on the same morning, and who is on the other side of your order?
Those answers exist. They are in prospectuses, index methodologies, regulatory filings, and the trading desks that run this market every day. They are simply spread across documents that almost nobody outside the industry reads. This site gathers them in one place, explains them properly, and gives them away.
Behind it are people who have spent years working with ETFs and kept running into the same gap: plenty of material explains what an ETF is, and almost none explains how the machinery works to someone who genuinely wants to know.
How it is built
chapters, three levels
A book, not a blog. Part I covers everything a first-time investor needs. Part II opens the machinery. Part III is institutional structure, edge cases and the honest debates.
original diagrams
Every concept that can be drawn, is drawn. No stock photography, no borrowed charts.
covered side by side
Tax, regulation and product menus differ by region, so chapters carry regional sections rather than quietly assuming an American reader.
The rulebook we hold ourselves to
Primary sources only
Regulators, prospectuses, index methodologies, peer-reviewed research, and the desks that actually run this market. Every source listed on every page.
Methods, never products
We advocate frameworks: core-satellite, honest glidepaths. We name funds only as dated examples, never as recommendations, and never in exchange for payment.
Numbers over adjectives
Every figure carries an as-of date. Projections always show 5% / 7% / 10% scenarios: one line is a promise, a fan is an education.
Both sides of every debate
Where we take a view, it is labeled “our view,” the consensus is stated first, and the counterarguments are printed next to it.
The editorial rule underneath all four: no commercial arrangement decides what a chapter says, which funds it names, or what conclusion it reaches. Where that ever stops being true of any part of this site, it will be disclosed on the page.
What this site is not
It is not advice. Nothing here knows your circumstances, your tax residence, or what you need the money for. The tax chapters describe how systems work, not what you should do inside them: rates and allowances change every year, which is why the numbers we print carry dates.
It is not finished. Chapters are published as they are written and reviewed, dated on the page, and revised when the facts move. Where a chapter is still in production, the site says so rather than publishing a thin version of it.

Corrections, questions and factual disputes
Especially welcome: a chapter that gets something wrong, a figure that has gone stale, or a source we should have read. Nothing improves this site faster.
We read everything and reply to what we can. We do not answer personal investment questions: doing that responsibly would mean knowing things about you that we should not be collecting.
